Home is where the heart was

Our home is supposed to be our safe haven, a place of stability in an unstable world. It is the most valuable possession we will ever own so naturally we have a close emotional bond and sense of belonging to it. Home is certainly where the heart lies, but having your house burgled can break your heart in two.

It’s not so much the material possessions that have been taken that upsets us, it’s the invasion of privacy, it is an emotional and frightening experience that we will never forget. Unfortunately, people living in major cites like London, Manchester and other affluent areas are a target for criminals, showing that regardless of which side of the North/South divide you live on, there is always a risk that your home could become the victim of theft.

Home-Insure700x991

Surprisingly, over a fifth of households in the UK still do not have any form of insurance to cover their home and its possessions according to housing charity Shelter. Without home insurance, owners are left to foot the bill themselves to the tune of a combined £200 million a year to replace missing items and damage to their properties.

From the research, Shelter found that 42 per cent of people could not afford to renew their home insurance and 22 per cent did not think it is that important. The fact is that whether you are renting or own a property having a comprehensive home insurance policy is crucial.

Steps can be taken to not only make their property less attractive to the criminal element but also to help reduce the cost of your annual home insurance policy. Install a home security system. This can be anything from security lighting to a professionally maintained alarm system. Regularly check the state of your locks. Replace older, weaker locks with new and more secure locks on all doors and windows. Most importantly, keep all items of value out of sight. Not just away from the window but even items left lying round the house, because even if your house is broken into, it is likely that the burglar will not want to hang around for long. The better hidden your items, the more secure they will be.
